Protagonist - 2009

"Design a product that enables and empowers someone who is confined to a wheelchair to interact and engage with other people socially and with the world around them."

The 'Protagonist' seeks to challenge this brief by making able bodied people aware of the access difficulties faced daily by people who use wheelchairs. The product is an interactive tag designed to be placed on buildings where disabled people's needs have not been considered. The tag automatically sends a pre programmed messsage to the mobile phones of passers by.

Protagonist was awarded 2nd place in the 'Action for Access' design competition run by Leonard Chesire Disability.

Protagonist Scenario:

The tags are designed as a visual disturbance , which along with the messages they transmit, aim to take able bodied people out of their comfort zone and to consider the needs of people who use wheelchairs more carefully.
